Faith and Works

Some Christians say that it is only faith that is needed. Works is not going to save you. Is this true? and what does the Bible say about this? Let us take a look at what James has to say.

James 2:14  What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

Can faith alone save you? How can one measure how much faith they have? Besides what is faith? Paul says that faith is:

Hebrews 11:1  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

But what do works have to do with anything?

James 2:15  If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

James 2:16  And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

James 2:17  Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

So faith on it's own is dead. We need to have works to show our faith. When a person becomes a new Christian and there is no change in their character, they are still the same when they were in the world. What help is this to them? or to the cause of GOD? If the new Christian does not help the people in need, what does it help? The world only sees a selfish person that calls themselves a Christian! The faith of this type of Christian is dead, as they don't do anything to show their faith.

James 2:18  Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

James is saying here that how can you measure faith without works! Christ can only reflect through us in what we do. The world only sees what a Christian does in their works not in their so called faith that they profess to have!

James 2:19  Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

James 2:20  But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Faith without works is dead! How then, as Christians can we say that works means nothing!

James 2:21  Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

James 2:22  Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

James 2:23  And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

James 2:24  Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

So a Christian is justified by works and faith. As a Christians faith is shown through their works.

James 2:25  Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

James 2:26  For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

So a Christian that says that it is all about faith is a dead Christian.

Let us take a look at Hebrews chapter 11.

Hebrews 11:1  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:2  For by it the elders obtained a good report.

Hebrews 11:3  Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

As Christians we must have faith that GOD created the Heavens and the earth as was recorded in Genesis. Christians cannot believe in evolution and then say that they believe in GOD and that GOD used evolution to create. This is not faith in the Word of GOD. Christians believe in the Bible and say that the world was created in six days and GOD rested on the seventh day!

Genesis 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Let us take a look at what faith and works the people in the old testament did.

Hebrews 11:4  By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

The works of Abel showed his faith in what GOD said that they must do. His offering of the lamb was in faith that his sins would be forgiven.

Genesis 4:4  And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

1 John 3:11  For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

1 John 3:12  Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

Cain's works were to evil and Abel's works were righteous.

Hebrews 11:5  By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

We learn that part of faith is to seek GOD.

Matthew 6:33  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Hebrews 11:7  By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

Noah's faith was also shown through his works. What would have happened if he just had faith that GOD was going to save him and his family without him building the ark that GOD required of him to do? He would have died with his faith!

Hebrews 11:8  By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

Hebrews 11:9  By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

Abraham should his faith through his actions, his works.

Hebrews 11:11  Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

Hebrews 11:17  By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

Hebrews 11:18  Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

Abraham had faith that GOD would raise Isaac after he sacrificed him. His works was in taking his child to mountain for sacrifice.

Hebrews 11:19  Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

Genesis 22:1-12  And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

Abraham showed his faith through his works. As did the other patriarchs.

Hebrews 11:23  By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.

Even the parents of Moses had faith and works mingled together!

Hebrews 11:24  By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;

Hebrews 11:25  Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

Hebrews 11:26  Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

Even the people in the old testament looked to Christ.

Hebrews 11:27  By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

Hebrews 11:28  Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

Here is part of Moses' works, in keeping the passover.

Hebrews 11:29  By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.

Hebrews 11:30  By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.

Hebrews 11:31  By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.

Even Rahab who was a pagan had faith and works. What was her works.

Joshua 2:17  And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.

Joshua 2:18  Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.

Joshua 2:19  And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

Joshua 2:20  And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.Joshua 2:21  And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

Rahab's works was in that she had to bind a scarlet thread in the window. If she did not have faith in the work of binding the scarlet thread in the window, she and her family would have died in Jericho.

Hebrews 11:32  And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:

Hebrews 11:33  Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,

Hebrews 11:34  Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

Hebrews 11:35  Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

Hebrews 11:36  And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

Hebrews 11:37  They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

Hebrews 11:38  (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

Hebrews 11:39  And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

Hebrews 11:39  And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

Hebrews 11:40  God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

Are we made perfect through our faith and works?

Hebrews 12:23  To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

Revelation 14:12  Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
