Latter Rain

What is the latter rain?

There are two Scriptures that are used for the latter rain.

Hosea 6:3  Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
Joel 2:28  And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

Firstly, in Hosea there is no mention that rain is the Holy Spirit. There are no verse in the Bible that say that rain is the Holy Spirit either.

Secondly, in Joel there is no mention of rain.

In Joel 2:23 it does speak of the former and the latter rain.

Joel 2:23  Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.

The word former rain in Joel 2:23 according to Strong's means:

mowreh mo-reh'
from 3384; an archer; also teacher or teaching; also the early rain (see 3138):—(early) rain.

In Hosea 6:3 former rain means:

yarah yaw-raw'
or (2 Chr. 26:15) yara; {yaw-raw'}; a primitive root; properly, to flow as water (i.e. to rain); transitively, to lay or throw (especially an arrow, i.e. to shoot); figuratively, to point out (as if by aiming the finger), to teach:—(+) archer, cast, direct, inform, instruct, lay, shew, shoot, teach(-er,-ing), through.

It can also mean to teach. The former rain is to teach, teaching.

Latter rain means:

malqowsh mal-koshe'
from 3953; the spring rain (compare 3954); figuratively, eloquence:—latter rain.

3953 -

laqash law-kash'
a primitive root; to gather the after crop:—gather.

3954 -

leqesh leh'-kesh
from 3953; the after crop:—latter growth.

So after you have been taught, you grow. This is the latter rain. This is what happens in nature, the latter rain makes the plants grow. Therefore we grow after the former rain or teaching of the truth. The truth or doctrine we find in Deuteronomy a verse about rain as well.

Deuteronomy 32:2  My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:

Here GOD says that His doctrine is as the rain. Today we hear that doctrine is not that important. That is another study as this is not what JESUS taught!

The Spirit is the Spirit of truth.

John 14:17  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 15:26  But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
John 16:13  Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

JESUS speaks of the Spirit of truth in these three verses and says that the world would not receive it. If we as Christians do not receive the truth, this makes us part of the world. There are a lot of hard sayings in the Bible.

John 6:60  Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

So the former rain is a teaching or teachers that will come to speak the doctrines of GOD. These doctrines will be the truth from the Bible and the world will not be able to receive them. Then the people who accept the former rain will grow in the Gospel of Christ.

Let us not just believe what others are saying because this is what is in your denomination! Study the Word of GOD for yourself! Christians all say that they are of GOD, GOD's children. If this is true then why is there error amongst the different denominations? There is only one JESUS and only one Spirit of truth!

1 John 4:6  We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
Galatians 1:6  I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
